Thousands came together on Saturday for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk to show their love and support for the victims, the fighters, and the survivors of this cancer that affects one of every eight women.
The participants, all in pink, were up bright and early to prepare for the walk. Some say the excitement from the night before further fueled their motivation to be at Bayfront Park.
"It's amazing, I mean, I've got goosebumps! I couldn't sleep," Carmen Lacy, a 9 year cancer survivor, said in excitement.
Lacy is walking alongside a group of women who, like her, have beaten this vicious disease. She told KRIS 6 News that could not have been more honored to be doing this with them.
"I'm proud to represent everybody that has gone through this," she said.
For some, one simple pink item of clothing was not enough. Jerry Olmeda came to the walk wearing a bright pink tutu, in the hopes of brightening someone's day.
"It means a lot to show support to those who you love, and if this brings a smile to someone's face, or me being here shows my loved ones that I'm here to support them, then I'll do what I have to do," he said.
People from all walks of life coming out to be part of the fight against breast cancer was a pretty spectacular view to see. More so for the people who are still battling the sickness.
Margaret Canales, who is still fighting her cancer, told KRIS 6 News that events like Making Strides Against Breast Cancer help a lot more than most people realize.
"It's wonderful to see everyone come out and support people that get breast cancer and I think it makes our journey a lot easier," she said.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the biggest breast cancer event of the year. Almost all the states had an event going on for this weekend.
